It was published in 1992 to celebrate the Borough centenary, has good informative text and lots of pictures you haven't seen anywhere else.
Francis Friths Pocket Album : SouthendFrith Book Company LtdFrith Book Company Ltd1-85937-822-6This was the only Southend book I could find at Waterstones! It cost £4.99 and is basically advertising the collection you can view at www.francisfrith.co.uk. It has a voucher in the back for a free print and further ones at half price, so it's worth purchasing just for that if you want to buy the pictures.
Southend Then & NowKen CroweSouthend Museum Service-This was published in 1994 and has old photos from the late 19th century to 1960 side by side with the equivalent view taken specifically for the book. There are a few over 40 scenes (80+ b&w pages) and some are from Castle Point and Rochford as well as the immediate Southend area. Cost £3.95 from the museum.
Southend Past : A Photographic Record 1865 - 1940J R SmithEssex County Council0-900360-52-6Published in 1979. A small collection of 15 old photos with accompanying text. 32 pages. £2.50 from W H Smiths.
The War Story of Southend PierA P HerbertCounty Borough of Southend-on-Sea-Published in 1945. 32 pages of interesting facts, images and comment on the Pier and the River Thames during the second world war. £4.20 on Ebay.
1967 Tourist GuideSouthend-on-Sea CorporationSouthend-on-Sea Corporation-An amusing and informative 1967 Tourists Guide with plenty of good pictures, text, facts and a map of the area. £5.30 on Ebay.
A Century of IronPeggy Dowie & Ken CroweFriends of Southend Pier Museum0-9514582-0-5A History of Southend's Iron Pier 1889 - 1989. A commerative book celebrating 100 years of Southend's Pier. Much of the content comes from council minutes and the archives of both the Southend Standard and Southend & Westcliff Graphic. £2.80 on Ebay.
Southend on Sea. Times PastKen Adamson--A photographic record of Southend and its suburbs in the early twentieth century.
